Internships

What are internships?

Internships are a wonderful and effective ways to connect your academic experience with the professional work arena. Internships allow you to gain valuable exposure to the workplace, provide the opportunity for skill development, and give you a competitive edge in the job search.

How can I find an internship?

There are many organizations seeking Environmental Studies students to serve as interns. Several internship opportunities are highlighted below.

Students can also contact our Internship Coordinator with questions or to inquire about new opportunities by emailing evrninternships@ku.edu

EVRN 490 - Environmental Studies Internship Program

Majors in the Environmental Studies Program are eligible to enroll in EVRN 490 and receive academic credit for their internship experience. Students may request that EVRN 490 count for 1-8 credits and are required to complete 40 hours of work for each credit. The credits earned in EVRN 490 can be used to satisfy Junior/Senior elective requirements for the major. EVRN 490 is graded Credit/No Credit.

For more information about the Internship Program, view the Internship Guidelines (pdf)

To apply to the Internship Program, complete the Internship Program Application (pdf)
Applications can be returned to the Environmental Studies Program Office or submitted via email to envstudies@ku.edu.

Students who have successfully completed the Internship Program Application, including supervisor expectations of the intern, will be given a permission number to enroll in EVRN 490.

Highlighted Internships

Bluestem Farm – Bluestem Farm operates on 80 acres in southwest Douglas County, Kansas. We raise grass-fed beef cattle, a few goats for meat and milk, chickens for meat and eggs, bees, fruit trees, and a garden. Our purpose is to supply food for our table and our neighborhood through a managed agro-ecosystem.  We model practices that will help conventional farms make more sustainable choices. For more information, contact: Karen Willey, Owner, Bluestem Farm, 785-979-9455, kwilley1@live.com

Diesel Health Project – The goal of the Diesel Health Project is to protect the health of the community by identifying, documenting, and taking mitigating action on environmental and health problems caused by goods movement in the Kansas City region, particularly diesel exhaust and other pollutants emitted by freight transportation, warehousing, and related activities. For more information, contact: Eric Kirkendall, Director, Diesel Health Project, 785-550-3408, kirkendall1@gmail.com

NASA DEVELOP Program – Part of NASA's Applied Sciences Program, DEVELOP addresses environmental and policy concerns through the practical application of NASA Earth observations. DEVELOP projects apply Earth observations to the application areas of Agriculture, Climate, Disasters, Ecological Forecasting, Energy, Health and Air Quality, Oceans, Water Resources, and Weather. For more information, contact: Merna Saad, New Business Developer, NASA DEVELOP Program, 757-864-5548, merna.n.saad@nasa.gov
